Ryan Emmons grew up traveling between his hometown of Santa Barbara, California, and the island of Hawaii. As a college freshman, he began working on a project which would soon be known as Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water, which he officially founded at 22 years old and which quickly became one of the most awarded and fastest-growing premium beverages in the United States. With the desire to create a sustainable product with unique health benefits and environmentally friendly packaging, Ryan created a brand revolving around water that originates through snowmelt and rain on the peak of Mauna Loa, an active volcano and one of the purest environments on Earth. The water is rich in electrolytes and alkaline, as well as magnesium, potassium, and calcium, which are good for skin, hair, nails and bones. With an annual growth rate of 170%, Waiakea Water went from 2,304 cases to 122,400 cases sold annually over the first three years—a 4,000% growth.

For every bottle sold, 650 milliliters of clean water is donated through PumpAid. So far, 500 million liters of water of water have been donated to communities in need in rural Africa. Waiakea Water is bottled in an eco-friendly way and is made entirely from recycled bottles. It’s cheaper than most of its competitors, at $2.79 for a liter, and is sold in thousands of stores, including national chains such as Whole Foods, across more than 40 states.
Ryan has been featured by Forbes, Environmental Leader, Fortune, Foodnavigator and Good Morning America for his innovation. He’s also been named one of the 10 most disruptive leaders in his industry by Beverage World Magazine and was the Bridge Entrepreneur of the Year in 2014. In a few months he’ll be celebrating his five-year anniversary with Waiakea, and continues to encourage people to drink healthy, drink sustainably, and drink ethically. Ryan lives in the Hawaiian Islands and is living out his purpose one bottle at a time.
